Winter Activities in Jackson Hole
There are many Jackson Hole winter activities you can enjoy in addition to skiing
As hard as it is to believe that there is life after skiing, in Jackson Hole, there truly is! Here is a list of Jackson winter activities that can keep you busy:
• Skiing
• Snowboarding
• Cross-country skiing (Nordic Skiing)
• Horse Sleigh Rides
• Snowmobiling
• Dog Sledding
• Telemark Skiing-- Telemarking skiing is a different form of skiing where the heels are not attached to the skis. Sondre Norheim, of Norway, is credited with creating this form of skiing, known for its different style of jumps and turns.
• Heli-Skiing-- Heli-skiing gets you out to the backcountry where you'll get fresh powder and no crowds. Imagine the opportunity to ski down the best snow in over 305,000 acres of ranges spanning 12,000 to 15,000 vertical feet!
• Hot Springs-- Try Granite Hot Springs situated in the Gros Ventre Wilderness within the Bridger-Teton National Forest (about 20 miles south east of Jackson). The pool there is just perfect for soaking in. The locals like Astoria Hot Springs which is 17 mile south of Jackson on Highway 89. You could also try Kelly Warm Springs, about 10 miles north of Jackson (clothing optional).
• Snowshoeing
• Sight seeing
• Yurt-- Experience staying in a Mongolian felt tent (Ger is another word for this) in the backcountry. You can just have lunch or plan to spend the night. Backcountry guides help make your backcountry time safer, more fun, and educational.
• Snowcat skiing-- This is a recent trend that allows skiers to fulfill their quest for fresh powder without emptying their pockets the way heli-skiing would. The only way to get fresh snow is to go where other skiers aren't. Two ways you can do it are by helicopter or by snowcat. The two advantages to snowcat skiing are that it is cheaper than heli-skiing and it isn't as held back by bad weather (a snowcat can make it up a hill whereas a helicopter can't fly in bad weather).
